BEAUTY OF ACADEMY THAT HELPS RETRAIN UNEMPLOYED (Hull Daily Mail Article August 8th 2007)
Helping to give people hope for the future has put an East Riding business in line for a prestigious award.
The Bellezza Academy, which provides training in beauty and holistic therapies, has been nominated for the Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare-sponsored Hull Daily Mail Contribution to the Community Award in The Business Awards 2007. The academy in Quay Road, Bridlington, was set up last year by Angela Langton and her sister Anna.So far, it has worked with more than 200 unemployed people.Angela, a director of the academy, said: "We give people hope and confidence and we create job opportunities, as well as self-employment options."If an unemployed person undergoes maths and English training, the academy can get them paid to do a manicure or facial course.Angela said: "The aim of the project is to work with people in the town to help them gain confidence and help them into self-employment or employment, but in a relaxed atmosphere, with no hard sell or pressure."It has been a hard slog, but so rewarding to see the end results." The academy also works with people on health-related benefits. It is an accredited Vocational Training Charitable Trust centre, offering NVQs and accredited one and two-day courses in beauty treatment. Bellezza has its own beauty salon where girls can practice on a dailybasis. It has built up a client base of 150 since opening in February. Angela said: "We also take students out to old people's homes and offer them some pampering. "We hope to persuade the Learning and Skills Council to take our project seriously. We have created a demand and we are different.
College is not always the right route for certain people as it has restrictions, especially if young females have childcare issues."
